Summer 2009
Dear Parents/Guardians 07 July 2009
NEWSLETTER
As we approach the end of term I would like to update you on the matters below. With a School Validation in June followed by our 50 th Anniversary celebrations it has been an exceptionally busy term. The School Validation Report has to be approved by the Education Board and should be issued early next term to parents. We are very pleased with the outcome of the report, recognising as it does the continuing good education provided here. The 50 th Anniversary Celebrations were very well attended; all students were given a commemorative badge and a piece of our 50 th Anniversary cake.
The recent States debate would seem to have given a green light to the promised re-building of the school but it is not yet clear whether there will be further delays. I am very grateful to our PTA Action Group, led by Ian Dorey, for the impressive and sustained campaign to ensure that the re-building of Les Beaucamps High School is high on the States’ agenda.
Staffing
With the closure of St Peter Port School at the end of term and other staff changes owing to retirement and promotions, we have nine colleagues leaving next week. As mentioned in my last newsletter, two key colleagues who have both made a huge impact on the continuing success of the school, Mr and Mrs Beardsell, are both retiring as respective Deputy Headteachers. Mr Beardsell’s association with the school first began in 1971 and Mrs Beardsell joined the school in 1992. Both Deputies have earned the respect and admiration of staff and students alike and we wish them well for the future.
Similarly, after a long association with the school, Mr Powell, our Youth Officer, has decided to retire. Mr Powell has inspired many youngsters to take up sailing and his work with students across a range of extra curricular activities has been far reaching. Good Luck, Mr Powell.
Other staff leaving are: Mr Buchanan, his inspiring teaching in English has been recognised by Elizabeth College where, from September, he takes up a promoted post as second in department. Mr Bentley, who has done an excellent job in leading the History Department this year, while Mrs Keeling has been on leave, is moving to The Grammar School and Mr Ives, who has also been an excellent interim Head of Science, is moving to Scotland. We hope Mr Ives, who is currently unwell, recovers his strength in time for his move to Scotland. Miss Matthews, who has been tireless this year looking after the Duke of Edinburgh Award and running Girls’ PE, has secured a full time post at St Sampsons High School and Mrs Embling, who teaches Art part time has also been an inspirational teacher for many of our emerging artists.
After over eight years of service in the School Office, Mrs Gina Streeting is leaving to work in her husband’s business. Mrs Streeting has been a stalwart member of the busy office team and we wish her well for the future.
Hair Styles
A reminder about our policy on hairstyles. Designs cut into hair, Mohican style cuts and brightly coloured hair are not suitable for school and as with facial piercing and other extremes I am asking for your support to ensure that high standards of presentation are maintained. Extremes do concern us and, from experience one realises that they are not always in the best interests of the youngsters themselves. If your child has a less formal hairstyle over the Summer holiday please ensure that he/she returns to school in September with a conventional hairstyle. Students will be sent home to change any unsuitable hairstyles.
Reports and Assessments
Students in Years 7, 8 and 10 will have reports issued on Friday, July 10 th, and Year 9 students will have an end of term Assessment. Please would parents/guardians return the acknowledgement slip.
Last Day Arrangements
Term ends at 1.25 p.m. on Friday, 17 th July. Lunch will be from 12.15 until 1.00 p.m. Once again, no buses are available to take students home at 1.25 and, therefore the following arrangements will apply. Students are asked to make their own arrangements to make their way home. We will use the lower playground (through the Staff Car Park) for anticipated additional parking. Car sharing would be helpful. A ‘one-way’ traffic system going around the back of the school with entrance through the Staff Car Park will be operated again. If everyone is patient the system usually works well!
Students need not wear school uniform on the last day.
